Man Flu!!

G’day,

feeling a wee bit 2nd hand – OxygenOffice upgraded to 2.4.1 but kde’s upgrade didn’t go ahead – I actually has to spent quite a bit of time moving it back to 3.5.8.  Found out the GUI still looked disappointing.

Sorry not much in this post..

Not so cheerful

Plenty of updates…..

G’day,
Updating has continued apace – I need to remember that PUE started out as a gtk1 distro and has been updated to the nicer gui of gtk2. Therefore, apps which didn’t work previously now work near flawlessly.
Inkscape has been updated from 0.43 to 0.47 and its scope and functions are breathtaking!! Guys forget Coreldraw – this is stunning!
Geany has been updated from 0.14 to 0.15 – which has a couple of extra functions but was necessary for programmers heaven …. TEAgtk – again the range of functions is awe inspiring (adjectives are flowing nicely here!)
Audacity updated from 1.3.2beta to 1.3.6 and there’s a significant upgrade of effects and functions. Makes a muso such as myself smile! (OK running out of wow adjectives). However, there’s a downside with this upgrade happiness – Xara and Audacity both use wxGTK 2.8 but Xara 2.8.7 and Audacity 2.8.9 and the twain cannot meet! I think I’d rather have Audacity updated and install SynfigStudio as a Xara replacement (and the Inkscape upgrade more than compensates). Also, testing of Xara by a Graphic Artist showed that it was a little unstable much to her chagrin and my disappointment.
Gnumeric has been updated from 1.6.3 to 1.8.2 with a few more functions – I think that’s more of a bugfix than a true update/upgrade.
mtPaint upgrade from 3.10 to 3.21 (a few extras in the newer version)
Intending to test an upgrade of OxygenOffice from 2.3.1 to 2.4.1 – but the sfs file was made with a different version of Puppy – need to find that version, boot up and open the squashfs then copy the innards.
Also intending to upgrade KDE from 3.5.8 (with some 3.5.9. binaries) to 3.5.10 – but initial testing shows that the GUI has come out a little fuggly – that’ll need work.
You may think that the versions I’ve updated to are still fairly old but they represent a significant leap in functionality and stability; and they work on this creaky old kernel!

Cheers

An earnest Developer….

G’day,

An interesting comment has been picked up in my SPAM thingy (if it is really SPAM) and I think a little explanation is needed for this blog.

This is primarily a diary of development notes for Puppy Ultimate Edition.  It also helps people who are testing PUE identify bugs and fixes.  It is not designed to be written for the newbie; so there will be terms and descriptions that are technical in nature.  This is not the normal style in which I write articles (I try to ensure all readers travel with me) but for brevity and efficiency (as I regularly refer to these articles) it is written without heeding the needs of the newbie.  However, with this in mind I will endeavour to provide additional material (when/where necessary) for the newbie tester so they have a better understanding…

Cheers

Bugfixing & Screenshooting

G’day,

‘path to’ errors + scripting typos + missing libraries have been addressed…

Added a very interesting game called freecol – a colonisation campaign game for java – set run action for jar files to ‘java -jar’ – so jar files will automatically be executed when clicked.  Also, realised I didn’t have an RSS agregator so installed the latest version of RSSowl.  Because the latest version work, it got me thinking….. Updates from now on (apart from bugfixes) will mostly focus on updating apps to the latest to see if they work ok or if they’re within acceptable resource usage.

New mods for rox have increased RAM usage marginally.

Completed the most up-to date screenshots of individual menu entries for the Help! section.  Marathon and very boring/repetitive.

Am starting to relook at the XDG menu system to try to reflect the look and feel of current menu; in order to meet the freedesktop.org standard for desktop/menu entries.  These modifications of the code will be posted to Sourceforge.  Please note that no iso will be uploaded to Sourceforge and that these larger downloads will be handled by my personal mediafire account – that’s not the intent of Sourceforge.  All stuff is released under the GPL license (not sure which version yet but it may be 2.0 as 3.0 is a bit difficult to get my head around) – unless the app has been released under a different license which it will be noted thus…

Am now remastering in order for further testing on other hardware platforms and online (my development platform’s Ethernet plug is busted and no wifi).  When this is done will upload to share.

Cheers

Martin

Pretty Picture

G’day,

Quick update first – added gaim 2.0.0 as an IRC chat (as a replacement for Pidgin which I could get to work!) – thx to the people who made Puppy 2.15CE where I nicked it from.  Also, added a show desktop function in the Tray – I tend to use this a lot with many windows open.  Anyway…..

Most think of the Rox filer as functional for the leets but leaves most users cold.  However, it is a very powerful tool and with a few tweaks and mods can operate with function and an aesthetically pleasing form.  Take a look…

Rox-Filer Mods

G’day,

Rox file manager now has a video thumbnailer.  I have also changed the rox toolbar icon theme (a nice red one).  I have modified some more tiles for rox background – starting to really look nice and professional.  Just wish rox had a treeview pane – which it doesn’t and no-one seems to be able to modify rox for this function …. yet.

Modified an incorrect path in a wbar entry.  And looking into an issue caused by the restore function.  Control Panel’s modification is now finished.  Investigating a small issue with the Deep Thought gtk theme.  Changed the link in Help! with categories which more closely match the menu.

I thought I could upload the packages for the rox mods but will provide links in the comment section when i’ve uploaded to mediafire

Cheers

Must be getting serious….

G’day,

Just registered Puppy Ultimate Edition with Sourceforge.  All new scripts and coding that’s unique to PUE will be uploaded, updated and available from that site.  It may help me project manage PUE a little better, instead of the slightly haphazard method I currently undertake.  My methodology is roughly doing whatever takes my fancy this time….  I will continue doing this but maybe with a little more directed focus.

Cheers
