Found cause…

Thunderbird and Firepup use similar libraries but they access them from different places. Firepup overwrites a dependency simlink to mozilla therefore causing issues. Thunderbird is looking for those dependencies simlinked to mozilla but can’t find the associated links – however there isn’t a dependency error which is strange. Somewhere in the bin scripts is the work around which I haven’t worked out yet, but there maybe a simpler solution….I have both Firepup and Thunderbird working together, so maybe the newer versions of Thunderbird are making life miserable.
